Father of the Year? Cops Accuse Stepdad of Using BB Gun to Motivate Son During Football Drills

For the second time this week, we have parents who think helping with their kid’s youth sports activity, but really aren’t. Early we had a mom who’s middle school daughters lost a volleyball game, so she allegedly went out to the car and got a gun to threaten the winning team. Niiiiiiiic.

Now we have a Florida stepfather who thought his teenaged son wasn’t in good enough shape to play football so he set up some special “conditioning drills” in the backyard. The only problem? Well, aside from the fact that the heat index in Central Florida was 107 that day, the father, Robert Lynn Barker, 41, was using a BB gun as part of the exercise. He claims he was using it like a starters pistol, but the boy claims he felt that the gun might be used as some kind of punishment. Neighbors must have felt the later as the cops were called and Barker was arrested. At right, his “I shoulda wore sun screen” mug shot.

Here’s more on the story from the Orlando Sentinel:

On Saturday, the teen began to feel numb and dizzy during a Tavares youth football game and was benched to rest, a Lake County sheriff’s report said. Barker said he decided to take his stepson home after he complained of side pain and that the boy soon felt better.

When they got home, Barker told the teen he needed more conditioning so he set up cones about 20 yards apart in the front yard of their home. He made the boy run sprints in his football gear using the BB gun to signal the beginning of the drill, he said.

It was 91 degrees with a heat index of 107 on Saturday, a deputy said in a report.

Youth Football Coach Accused of Punching Player, 12

Dumbass Category LogoThere’s probably going to be a huge debate on this one: how far can a youth football coach go to get the attention of one of his players who’s screwing up? Yell at him? Sure.

Grab a jersey or facemask and shake him? Yeah, we bet that’s done all the time.

How about punching him in the stomach and head with a football, knocking the kid–allegedly–to the ground for running the wrong way?

That might cross the line. Your thoughts?

Here’s the full story from CBS in Atlanta:

A Cherokee County father told CBS Atlanta that a coach for a Woodstock recreation football team punched his son twice, after the child ran the wrong direction during a play. Jose Sandoval said that the coach used a football to hit his son, Aurdric, in the stomach and head.

“He definitely went too far,” Sandoval said. “You don’t punch a kid that hard, when you literally knock him off his feet.” Sandoval’s son played for the Woodstock Junior Wolverines, a recreation league for middle school students. Sandoval said that he and his older son rushed onto the field to stop the coach, identified as Doug Mowery in a police report.

“The park has a rule that no parents are allowed on the field,” said Sandoval. “I don’t care what rule you have. When someone is punching your child, the rules are out the window.” Cherokee County School Police investigated the incident, since it occurred on school property. The league, however, is not affiliated with the school district. Police did not file charges.

Youth Football League Treasurer Accused of Taking Vacation With Kid’s Money

Dumbass Category LogoNeed money for a vacation? No problem! Just borrow a few THOUSAND dollars from the kids in your youth football league. They’ll never miss it.

The former treasurer of Oak Creek Youth Football told police he used money from the league to pay off his vehicle loan and to help pay for a vacation he took in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, according to a criminal complaint released Wednesday. Dennis J. Schulte is scheduled to make his initial appearance Thursday in Milwaukee County Circuit Court. The 47-year-old Oak Creek resident faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted of a felony embezzlement charge.

According to the complaint: After Dan Sass, the president of the league, contacted Oak Creek police in February, Schulte admitted to using league money to pay off his Chrysler van and to make cash withdrawals during the Mexican vacation and at Potawatomi Bingo Casino in Milwaukee. Schulte made 67 unauthorized withdrawals of league funds totaling $15,420 from September 2008 through January 2010.
