You can still be a professional athlete and not be on love with the fans. Then again, spitting on them, even if it’s meant to be a gesture of love, is likely not going to make you more popular, especially in the dignified world of Wimbledon tennis.
A tennis player who spat at spectators at Wimbledon has escaped a lifetime ban from the All England Club. Romanian Victor Hanescu was instead fined a total of 15,000 US dollars (£10,000) by All England Club chiefs for unsportsmanlike conduct and ‘not using best efforts’ after walking out on his third round clash on Court 18.
Video footage showed the Romanian reacting angrily to comments and jeers from the crowd before quitting his match against German Daniel Brands. He was fined tonight after a review of the incident by championships’ referee Andrew Jarrett and Grand Slam supervisors. Wimbledon officials had said the charges against him could have carried a ban.
But Mr Jarrett said: ‘Victor Hanescu has been fined 7,500 US dollars (£5,000) for unsportsmanlike conduct and a further 7,500 US dollars (£5,000) for not using best efforts at the conclusion of the match. No further comment will be made by the Referee or the chair umpire.’
