Can you hear me now?
Probably not if you’re the winning CYO coach of a 6th grade basketball team in Springfield, MA. (For those of you not familiar with the acronym, CYO stands for Catholic Youth Organization and for parts of the country where there is a large Catholic population, they run the sports programs at the grade schools. So yes, the biter was supposed to be a good Christian man.) Reports are not telling us what triggered this incident, but apparently the biter, Timothy Lee Forbes, 34, was not happy with the bitee and winning coach, also 34.
After the game, Forbes allegedly approached the victim, words were exchanged, fisticuffs ensued and, instead of giving the other guy a piece of his mind, the assistant coach took part off the guy’s ear. Forbes fled the scene, reportedly knocking over some of the crying children on his way out, but turned himself in later. He now stands charged with mayhem (Mayhem? What is this an Allstate commercial?), assault and battery, disorderly conduct, and–wait for it–assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Forbes is being held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing on Friday. The victim had surgery to re-attach the piece-o-ear, but there is no word on his condition or the success of the operation.
My favorite part of this story is from the preliminary hearing where Forbes’ attorney, Philip Lauro, is quoted as saying “It’s a very difficult situation for everyone involved.” Yes, especially for the GUY WHO HAD PART OF HIS EAR BIT OFF IN PUBLIC IN FRONT OF HIS KIDS. Your client, Mr. Lauro, not so much. (Video from the hearing below)
