From the 9/4/94 Montreal Gazette:
Rugged National Hockey League winger Bob Probert has been suspended indefinitely
and will take part in treatment for substance abuse, the league announced
yesterday. Probert, signed as a free agent by the Chicago Blackhawks this
summer, will begin a rehabilitation program immediately, NHL commissioner Gary
Bettman said in a news release. "We won't speculate on the time of his
return to the Blackhawks," Bettman said.
Probert, 29, signed a four-year, $ 6-million contract with Chicago in August
after being released in July by the Detroit Red Wings. He was involved in a
motorcycle accident July 15 and charged with impaired driving. Blood tests by
Michigan police showed Probert had a blood alcohol level of .31 per cent and
also indicated the presence of cocaine in his system. Probert, who faces a
hearing Sept. 9 on the accident-related charges, also faces a hearing Sept. 2 on
charges he assaulted a woman in a Dallas bar last December.
