Eric Mason and Jabba the Hut" width="300" height="174" />
Separated at Birth? That's former youth football league president Eric Mason on the left.

Eric Mason, former president of the Okolona Titans Youth Football League in Louisville now faces felony charges of embezzlement after a local TV station uncovered evidence that nearly $15,000 was missing from the league’s coffers. According to the story at WAVE 3, the alleged criminal activity first came to light during a segment of their “Troubleshooter Department” when parents came forward to ask what happened to all the money they had put in to support the league.

According to the WAVE investigation, Mason allegedly forged a document to get control of the league’s bank account then took out hundreds, sometimes thousands of dollars at a time and kept no records of what he spent it on. In the end though, the league’s debit card provided a paper trail that showed he used the kid’s money to pay cell phone bills, stop at gas stations, go shopping, and–wait for it–go out to eat. Probably A LOT from the mug shot above which also shows he bears a striking resemblance to Jabba the Hut for Star Wars fame. Coincidence?

We were unable to substantiate claims that Mason also had girls in metal bikini’s around him at all times and frequently blubbered “Bring me Solo and the Wookie” but we’ll report on that anyway.

Eventually the local cops got around to investigating the case themselves and after several months issued a warrant for Mason’s arrest. If convicted, Mason could face years of jail time or could chose instead to be encased in Carbonite and put on display in the league office.

UPDATE: When WAVE TV viewers found out that the Okolona Titans Youth Football League didn’t have enough money in their account at the end of the last season to host their annual pizza party, they pitched in and threw one for the kids and also took their player pictures.

This time it’s the manager for the cheerleading squad at St. Pius High School (NM) who was somehow able to slide $18,000 into her business account before anyone noticed. The real question isn’t how D’Andrea Davis got away with it over the past 10 years (account friends of mine say that oversight of these mini-nonprofit groups is zero) but how parents could fork over that much dough and not have any idea of how it was spend or what they were getting for their money.

Right now, NBA Commissioner David Stern is only cancelling pre-season games. Who cares, right? To borrow a phrase from former star Allen Iverson, “We’re talking about practice, man. I mean, how silly is that? We’re talking about practice!” But soon, we will be talking about cancelling regular season games (currently scheduled to start on November 1) which could result in a shortened season.

Big deal, you say? The NBA seasons is already too long? That maybe true, but you forget about the impact on one important group.

And no, we don’t mean pro basketball groupiess, although those poor girls will have to find new jocks in other sports (indoor soccer anyone?) to pursue during the lockout. No, we’re talking about the guys who make the odds for NBA games in Las Vegas . . . and wherever sports betting is legal. No games, no reason to calculate the odds. No reason to calculate the odds, no reason to pay someone to sit there all day . . . unless you’re taking bets on when the NBA season will start and then they can calculate the odds of when the season will start. Other than that, it’s over. Damn it, someone is going to laid off because of this! Some poor guy (or gal) who used to sit in a back room, looking over player and team stats and coming up with insanely tantalizing odds that somehow always seem to let the house win. Now that’s a skill.

The strike could also impact oddsmakers in other ways, as gambler cash moves over into other sports like hockey, football, and women’s beach volleyball. It will throw an entire little world into chaos . . . for what? In the end, the owners will make money, the players will make money and your favorite team will once again tank so early in the season you’ll actually look forward to the WNBA season to start.

And yet, in a few days, without a new NBA contract, games will be cancelled and at some point the jobs of the little people will be lost. And then, you’re going to have to start learning how to handicap European soccer games to have something to bet on.

Is that what you really want?
