Millersville U Women's Lacrosse Hazing Update: Three Members Suspended, Team Put on Double-Secret Probation - After an extensive investigation, Millersville University found that three players violated school hazing policies at a team party last February by taking what are being called "embarrassing photos" of some of the new players at an off-campus party. On top of the two-week suspension, the lady jocks are required to develop an anti-hazing program for other athletes and the entire team also will have to perform community service. (Lancaster Online) Earlier story here. Headline of the Year? Tennis Coach 'Demanded Lesbian Sex' - Yeah, it got my attention, too, but it turns out that the paper was talking about a female tennis coach in the UK, Claire Lyte, who's accused of having an affair with a 14-year-old tennis prodigy and faces five charges of unlawful sexual activity with a child. Her trial is going on right now, and today the girl's mother got on the witness stand and described--in great detail--how she found Lyte and her daughter naked in bed. The victim claims she was pressured into the relationship and that Lyte threatened to ruin her promising tennis career if she refused her advances. (Telegraph) Father Allegedly Punches Football Coach Over Son's Lack of PT, New Jersey Law to be Tested - This is a wave BadJocks has been watching for a while now: parents of young athletes attacking coaches over a perceived lack of playing time for the kids. And we're not talking about high school or college athletes here: we've had stories of kids at young as 6 whose parents attacked coaches because Junior wasn't in the game. This one's coming folks and it's going to be bad. Which is why the State of New Jersey adopted a new law in 2002 that increased the punishment for parents who commit assaults during youth sports. Before that law took effect, most incidents like this were treated like disorderly conduct cases and mostly resulted in fines. Now, under the law, Mario Romano, 42 could face up to 18 months in prison and be forced to pay more than $10,000 in fines for allegedly punching his son's Pop Warner football coach, Peter Van Ruitenbeek, 44, and KNOCKING him unconscious for nearly 30 minutes. (NY Times) Thanks to A.D. for the tip! New BadJocks Record? HS Wrestling Coach Arrested for Third DUI, But Search Finds 24 Run-Ins With the Law - Yeah, we know, some softball coach got her 4th DUI last month, but what Chad Allen Latch lacks in drunk driving arrests, he more than makes up for in other alleged criminal activity. It's bad enough that the Ames, Iowa school district missed the two prior DUI's before his arrest last week, but a check of court records show that in the past, the 34-year-old's name was associated with 24 court cases dealing with everything from fifth-degree theft, rioting and making a false report to law enforcement, to eight alcohol-related charges. Oh, and in addition to being wrestling coach, Latch was also an educational assistant at Ames High School. Good job on that background check there Ames. (Des Moines Register) Weightlifting Coach Accused of Using Hidden Camera to Film HS Girls, Using Phony MySpace Profile to Get Naked Pics - The charges have shocked people who knew James C. Hart, a power lifting coach in Lancaster County, Nebraska. Cops say that not only did Hart use a MySpace account to coerce underage girls to send him naked pictures, but that he also hid a video camera near a changing room in his basement where he encouraged female students to change clothes. As for the MySpace charge, prosecutors say that Hart created an account saying he was only 18 and somehow got girls as young as 14 to take nude pictures of themselves and send them to him. The mother of one of the girls found some of the pictures on their home computer and notified cops. When police raided Hart's home they found videos on his computer of girls that Hart coached as they undressed in front of a hidden camera. (MSNBC) Thanks to RWD for the link! More College Sports Hazing: Racial Epithet Written on Rookie's Back Starts Brawl at Salve Regina U - Did we call it or did we call it? Just yesterday morning (see below) we suggested that college sports hazings were "peaking" about now and low and behold another one pops up: According to police, back on Sept. 23, three students from Salve Regina University (a Catholic college in Rhode Island) got into a bit of a scuffle outside a bar because of a T-shirt. Apparently the student with the shirt, a member of the men's soccer team, had been at a "drinking party" earlier in the evening and during that event, someone had written a racial slur on his back that he was unaware of . Oops. Cue the unfortunate confrontation later with someone who was offended by the slur. The university has investigated that incident and determined that this all happened as a result of a hazing ritual and the soccer team will forfeit five games as a result. But before you applaud the university for its swift and strong response to hazing, some sources are claiming that at least two other sports hazing incidents have been brought to the school's attention in the past year with little or no response. Was action taken against the jocks in those cases? It it was, the message certainly didn't get through to the guys on the soccer team. (Providence Journal) Guilty, Guilty, Guilty! Jury Says Knick's Isiah Thomas, Madison Square Garden Management Guilty of Harassment - The New York Knicks have found a way to embarrass themselves even before the NBA season begins! A Manhatten a jury ordered the owners of the New York Knicks to pay $11.6 million to former team executive Anucha Browne Sanders because they allowed her to endure crude insults and unwanted advances from coach Isiah Thomas. On the plus side, Thomas will not have to pay any of the fine himself, but on the down side he will still be the team's coach when the new season begins. Both MSG and Thomas say they will appeal the verdict. (CNN)
