Youth Sports Parents Behaving Badly
We've said it before and we'll say it again: adults are ruining organized sports for kids. That's why junior would rather skateboard with his friends or play video games alone in his room before he'll play baseball in front of mom and dad . . . 'cause his parents are nuts! Don't believe me? Check out these prize winners:
#1 - Cops Say Soccer Mom Hit Daughter's Coach in Face With Folding Chair -
What is going on in Long Island? Just last week (see below) we had an incident where a guy wearing a coonskin cap (oops, my bad, it's actually a toupee) allegedly pummeled a Little League coach for benching his son. Now comes word from police that a Long Island soccer mom, Alicia Vigil, 33, allegedly got into a heated verbal exchange with her daughter's soccer coach on Sunday and struck the 67-year-old volunteer in the head with a FOLDING CHAIR that resulted in a split lip and cut on the face. Like something out of professional wrestling, only there wasn't a championship belt on the line . . . that we know of. What caused Vigil to become so upset when her daughter didn't even play in the game due to an injury? According to the victim, Sam Schwarzman, he took Vigil off the parents email list for the Nassau Queens because she e-mailed him "nasty letters" about practices and other matters. There was also something in there about not getting directions to away games, but none of it approaches a chair-bashing level of frustration. In her defense, Vigil says she never struck the coach and that it was he that verbally abused her, making her fear for her own safety. This Mother of the Year finalist was charged Monday with second-degree reckless endangerment. (Newsday) Hat tip to long time reader John Love for the story!

#2 - Drunken Moms & Cheerleading Daughters Brawl During Pop Warner Football Game - This wasn't even a fight between rival teams: everyone cheers for the same squad! And yet, according to the Cape Junior Football Association (Florida) league officials, there has been bad blood between several girls and their mothers for weeks now and it all spilled over--literally--in the stands at a game last Friday night. According to the league, it started when one mom (who officers say smelled of alcohol) threw an alcoholic beverage at another mom. Then a second mom AND her cheerleading daughter got involved, allegedly punching the initial victim and brawling with her daughter. Police are still trying to sort things out and are still considering filing charges, but league officials met over the weekend and banned Laura Catanzaro, 46, and Nicole Hemmer, 31, and their daughters for one year. Suddenly, it seems like every story we have today is about angry sports fans and knives. Is it something in the fall air?
Teenaged Girl Attacks Parents Who Won't Let Her Go to HS Football Game, While Brother Threatens Dad With Steak Knife -
On one hand, you have to admire this girl's determination: she wanted to go to her high school team's football game and damm it she wasn't going to let her parents stop her!. This all happened in--I'm not making this up!--Licking County, Ohio where the 14-year-old who attends good ol' Licking High wanted out and dad stood in the door to stop her. At that point, her 15-year-old brother jumped in to help and held dad in a chokehold while threatening him with a steak knife. Of course, it wouldn't be a family brawl if mom didn't get involved and she was able to tag-team in and disarm the boy. Cops were called and both teens ended up in jail. No word on the final score of the game, but we're sure someone took a licking. (Newark Advocate)

That's a Stabbin'! Husband & Wife Argue Over Soccer Game, Ends With Her Attacking Him -
A Russian woman is in jail after she got into an argument with her husband while watching a soccer game and ended up stabbing him. According to police, the couple were--surprise!--drinking while watching a Euro 2008 qualifier game where their home team, Russia, beat England 2-1, got into an argument and "emotions flared." (GDN)

HS Streaker Caught During Halftime "Show" Later Withdraws From School in Embarrassment - He was charged with indecent exposure and resisting a public officer.

Second Coach at Ohio Christian School in Trouble Over Sex Allegations - It happened twice in three days! First, the boys' soccer coach at Worthington Christian High School, Dwayne Smith, resigned after past allegations of sexual misconduct with a student surfaced in a local news report about teacher sex scandals. Then, only three days later, police handcuffed Jason Crary, the girl's soccer coach, and lead him out of the building. Crary is charged in Wisconsin with four felony counts of sexual assault by a school staff member for offenses that occurred between September 1997 and March 1998, possibly related to when he coached boys' and girls' soccer at Heritage Christian High School in Milwaukee. Is this another case of a coach/teacher at one school just moving on to another state after an incident comes to light? (Columbus Dispatch) Hat tip to our favorite reader for the link!

Caught on Tape: HS Football Dad Runs Onto Field, Beats Opposing Player After Jarring Hit Starts Brawl - Kirby Thompson was arrested during the Garrard County and Wayne County football game Friday night for getting a little too involved in his son's game. A jarring hit knocks the helmet off a Wayne County player who immediately gets up and starts going after players from the other team. Before you know it, a brawl has broken out on the field and to make things worse, Mr. Thompson, the parent of one of the WC players joins in and starts slapping around a GC player . . . and it was all caught on tape. Yep, he's been arrested. (WKYT - Link includes video clip.)

Seven Years Later, Main Stream Media Finally Catches Up to BadJocks: "Sexual Misconduct Plagues U.S. Schools, AP Reports" - Would you believe it? HS coaches and teachers might actually be having inappropriate relationships with their underage students . . . which often goes unreported and/or unpunished. The result? Bad teachers/coaches move from school district to school district, state to state, and never lose their teaching licenses. If only there was a website that reported on these types of crimes and warned the public about them! (CNN)

Middle School Cancels Football Season After Hazing Allegations - Middle school hazing? No details have come out on what exactly was done, but officials at Memorial Middle School in Laconia, NH say the incidents happened over four weeks in an unsupervised locker room. Whatever happened behind those closed doors, it was bad enough to force the school to act quickly and cancel the final two games of the season. Said one concerned parent, "They say they didn't mean to do it. How could you not mean to do something that disturbing and then get everybody else to follow?" Good question. We're thinking the dreaded "rear admiral" has resurfaced as the popular hazing technique. Be afraid, be very afraid! (WMUR)

HS Girl Body Paint Update: Manatee Principal Did It to Protect Their Boobies! - Well, it took a few days but we finally have gotten to the real reason why Manatee Principal Robert Gagnon pulled two girls, Jessyca Altenbach and Monica Cummings, out of the stands last Friday night and told them to cover up or leave. Why? The pair had only body paint and bikini tops on at the football game (just like a number of their male counterparts) and Gagnon now claims he booted them to protect their modesty. No, seriously, apparently young ladies walking around in a crowd with bikini tops on could somehow lose them and then they would be topless and then all hell would break lose. (Another article claims a rumor spread through the stands that the girls were actually topless except for the body paint.) According to Gagnon, allowing bikinis at the game would have set the school up for other problems, like having to decide when it's too small or how to protect bikini-wearing girls as they jostle through the throngs of people who attend games. "That's the last thing I want to do, is put a kid in a bikini walking through a crowd," Gagnon said. Yeah, there are never any crowds at say, the beach or a swimming pool, are there? (Herald Tribune) Thanks to Artie Bigley for another great link!

Little League Coach Beaten by Dad and His Brother For Benching Foul-Mouthed 11-Year-Old Player - Long Island Little League coach James Edge thought he was doing the right thing when he benched a young player who repeatedly cursed during batting practice. Wrong! The upset boy then called his father Frank Basile, 48, (mug shot, at left above, wearing a coonskin cap) who soon arrived at the ballpark with his brother Roger Basile, 43, and the stocky pair allegedly took turns beating up the coach in front of his players. Said Edge, "This lunatic father and brother came running out from the parking lot and viciously attacked me on the mound. I thought I was in the Twilight Zone. ... The kids were crying." The pummeling was severe enough to send the coach to the hospital. If the name Frank Basile sounds familiar to sports fans, he is best known around  town for the tag-team beating he and former New York Jet Mark Gastineau allegedly gave a fan at a restaurant in Island Park back in 1991. (NY Daily News) According to the NY Post, the bothers owned an infamous, "mobbed-up Long Island restaurant."

Thanks Dad! Father of HS Cheerleader Allegedly Threatens Girl's Coach When She's Not Named Squad Captain - Sometimes parents of jocks think they're helping when they are not. One good example: Luigi Lavorgna, 43, whose daughter is a cheerleader at North Branford High School in Connecticut. Luigi allegedly confronted cheerleading coach Jennifer Miller outside the school following a meeting involving Lavorgna’s 17-year-old daughter, Giovanna, who was upset about not being chosen as a captain for the cheerleading team. According to Coach Miller, Lavorgna said he would beat her up and "send people after (her)" and did so using all sorts of colorful language. And now dad has been charged with second-degree breach of peace for the alleged threats. Great. (New Haven Register)

WE HAVE PICTURES! Female Sports Fan Body Painting Controversy Update - Finally! Thanks to reader Ken R. who sent us a link to the photos of the "naughty girls" from Manatee High School girls, Jessyca Altenbach and Monica Cummings (both 17) who were kicked out of a recent HS football game for wearing body paint and bikini tops in support of their team. The got the boot even though boys with painted bodies were allowed to stay. Why? School policy says it's up to the principal to decide what is offensive and after some constipated fans complained about the girls (and not the similarly painted boys) he made the call. Your outta here! (Local 6 - Link includes video clip)
BONUS IMAGE: Why middle-aged women and body paint do NOT mix! Slightly not safe for work (or your eyes) picture sent to us by a loyal reader.
EARLIER: Latest Controversy on HS Campuses? Female Fans Wearing Body Paint to Games
- Long the domain of fat guys and drunken frat boys, the idea of showing your school spirit by painting your chest in school colors (or to spell out a team name) has now spread not just to female football fans, but female football fans at the HIGH SCHOOL level. Que adults freaking out! A school district in Sandusky, Ohio claims they've ALWAYS banned body paint, and it's not just the recent appearance of gals in painted sports bras that has their undies in a bunch. According to Principal Dan "I Hate My Job" Poggiali, "Body painting has never been allowed. As long as I've been here we haven't allowed it. For this to become an issue now, it's puzzling." Meanwhile, down in Florida, two Manatee High School girls, 17-year-old Jessyca Altenbach and 17-year-old Monica Cummings, were asked to leave a recent game after they donned bikini tops with khaki shorts and painted their chests in the school colors of red and blue. A school district spokeswoman said their principal, Bob "No More Fun of Any Kind" Gagnon, thought the girls were "suggestive and offensive," and that "it gave the appearance of being very inappropriate." Not surprisingly, the girls feel there is a double standard when it comes to body painting a football game.
