Second Drunken HS Bus Driver of the Week??!!! - Are local school districts so pressed for cash these days that they're paying bus drivers for athletic events in booze? That sure seems to be the case this week as we report the arrest of our second drunken, jock-toting bus driver. Earlier this week (see story below) it was a bus driver for the New Albany High School cheerleaders. Now comes word that another, nearly identical, situation happened to the girl's volleyball team at Dallas Center-Grimes High School in Iowa. Once again the driver was taking the team home from their event and, again, the coach thought he was driving erratically and asked him to pull over. When police arrived, they tested bus driver Michael Louis Rolow, 49, (who, ironically, was chief of the Windsor Heights Police Department before retiring in December 2002 after 23 years of service) and found that his blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit. (That would be around .16-.17%, slightly less than the BAC of the 60-year-old Indiana bus driver which was .19%. Suck it, Iowa!) Little Bastards' Season on the Brink: Undefeated HS Football Team Loses Starters to Armed Crime Spree Charges -The big news at Wando High School in South Carolina this week was supposed to be the match-up tonight against Summerville with both teams looking for an undefeated season with identical 2-0 records. But that game will not be the same after seven members of the football team--including the starting quarterback--were arrested following a crime spree in the small town of Mt. Pleasant. According to police, the boys used a gun to rob a grocery store, Subway restaurant, and stole a $35,000 BMW. So far, police don't have a motive for the crime spree, but stupidity is considered the prime suspect. (Post and Courier) Thanks to Fark.com for the link!

Parents, Coaches, Fans: You Can Prevent Hazing - We get lots of emails from parents, coaches and just general sports fans every time we run a story about high school or college sports hazings asking us if there's anything that can be done to stop them. Cheerleading Bus Driver Arrested for DUI - "We've got spirits yes we do, we've got spirits how 'bout you?" The answer to that cheer for a 60-year-old school bus driver for New Albany High School (Indiana) is a resounding YES, as Sylvia Cooke blew an impressive 0.19% BAC after driving a bus full of cheerleaders and their coach following a football game Friday night. According to police, the coach though Cooke "seemed confused and her driving seemed erratic" on the way home and asked her to PULL OFF THE HIGHWAY and into a gas station where they waited for police.  Cooke, a long time driver for the district, is charged with operating while intoxicated and having a blood-alcohol level of more than .08. While Cooke's boozing was impressive for an elderly woman, it's not quite enough to make the Top 20 of our BadJocks BAC Rankings of the biggest drunks in sports. (Courier- Journal)

Reporters Not Going to Jail Over BALCO Grand Jury Leaks . . . Yet - Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams, two reporters for the San Francisco Chronicle who broke open the BALCO steroids scandal and went on to write "Game of Shadows," will avoid jail for the time being. The Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that the pair can remain free until their case is heard. They are in trouble for refusing to reveal their confidential sources of grand jury testimony about the use of performance-enhancing drugs by athletes, including slugger Barry Bonds. Youth Football Coach Attacks Opposing Player During Game, Faces Child Abuse Charges (w. Video Clip!) - We saw this story earlier, but it wasn't nearly as interesting when you watch the home video clip. According to police, 36-year-old Cory Petero, an assistant coach for the Riverbank Redskins, became upset late in the game when a player for the Stockton Bears knocked his son over with a late hit. Petero is seen on the video running onto the field and leveling the Bears player. As you might guess, at that point all hell broke lose and players, coaches and fans became involved in a full out brawl that--at least according to one report--lasted 20 minutes before police arrived. By that time Coach Petero had jumped a fence and ran off, but later turned himself in. According to Stockton police, he was booked into the San Joaquin County jail on one count of child abuse. Looks like someone got in a few good licks before he ran off.

College Cancels Men's Soccer Season After Players Allegedly Steal Food, Cash at NASCAR Fundraiser  
Have you ever worked at a concession stand during a sporting event to raise money? Lots of college and pro teams have special locations in their arenas that allow groups to come in and work during an event to raise money for their cause. That's what the men's soccer team from Tusculum College in Greeneville, Tennessee was supposed to be doing during a NASCAR race at Bristol Motor Speedway this past weekend. Instead, it appears some of the boys were helping themselves to free food and money and as a result, the school has taken drastic action and cancelled the remainder of its 2006 men’s soccer season. On top of that the coaches (including the head coach who'd been with the team for 18 years) have also tendered their resignations. Apparently all the money has been returned, but the damage has already been done, according to Athletic Director Ed Hoffmeyer who said, "This is a sad day for Tusculum College athletics. It pains me that the actions of a few have tainted the reputation of many.  Our student-athletes are held to a higher standard.  We put them forward to represent us and to be our ambassadors.  With that role comes instant recognition, but also great responsibility." The Long and Winding Road? Months After Being Notified of Men's Soccer Team Hazing Pics, U of Delaware Still Investigating - The University of Delaware is working on a new BadJocks record for the longest investigation into an alleged hazing photos posted online. Back in June the school was given pictures of what appeared to be the men's soccer team in someone's backyard wearing outfits made of diapers fastened with duct tape, carrying bottles of what appeared to be adult beverages. Not the worst hazing pics we've ever heard of, but certainly worth looking into . . . for four or five months. On top of that the team has a new coach who's already pulled out the "but they're good kids who made a silly mistake" excuse, ignoring the fact that this has probably been a tradition on the team for years. We expect to get a full report from the school sometime in 2007, long after anyone involved in the pictures has graduated, turned pro, or gone into the witness protection program. (Delaware Online)

Naughty HS Cheerleaders: Girl Shares "Happy Pill" With Squad Before Game - Can HS cheerleaders ever be to happy? We have to admit we've seen hundreds of them at games over the years and being excited and peppy never seem to be a problem for most of the gals. But that natural high was apparently not enough for three young ladies from Edgewood High School who tried to get an "edge" on peppiness before a football game against Lebanon last week. According to police, at a team dinner before the game, one cheerleader decided to share a doctor prescribed "happy pill" with two other girls. No word on the punishments they will receive, but BadJocks has received anonymous reports that cops suspected something was wrong after they had to use teargas to get the girls to stop cheering more than four hours after the game was over Friday night.
