These were encouraging words to someone like myself, help who questions whether Little League’s entire apparatus is a pyramid arranged to funnel all its players through a system that crowns world champions at age 12.
Within its system, however, come problems. Most town leagues end by mid-June or earlier, at which point the town all-star teams are chosen.
Those teams compete in a series of regional tournaments that lead up to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa. This winnowing-out process means that in many locales, the vast majority of kids are through with baseball for the summer before summer has officially begun. Then people wonder why kids drop baseball for lacrosse or soccer.
