Does “Do you know who I am?” ever really work with the police? The fact that you have to ask, pretty much says it all … they either do not know and/or they do not care. Either way, you are going downtown.
This time around it was San Diego Charger wide receiver Legedu Naanee, who came upon a crime scene and refused to leave. Reeking of alcohol, Nannee 1st hurled profanities at the officer & when he resisted arrest (always a good 2nd move), good ol’ pepper spray was used to subdue him. Once in handcuffs, he fired off the classic line “Do you know who I am? I am an NFL player and I’m going to sue your ass.”
Adding insult to injury, his entourage took on the mommy-role by trying to persuade the cop to let him go using another classic line, the ominous “You’ll ruin his career”. Athlete arrests could not get more clichéd …
Sign on San Diego has the details:
The police officer said after several attempts to get Naanee to leave the scene failed, he told Naanee he was under arrest. Naanee “actively began to pull away” and the officer used pepper spray but Naanee continued to resist. Eventually he was handcuffed and as he was being walked to the police car, Naanee said, according to police, “Do you know who I am? I am an NFL player and I’m going to sue your ass.”
