High School Coach Sex Scandal LogoOur first HS Coach Sex Scandal of 2011!

Somehow, the math just didn’t work out for Jefferson Middle School (NC) coach/teacher Mark Mercer and he now faces what we believe is a record number of charges for a High School Coach Sex Scandal. According to police, Mercer had an inappropriate relationship with not one, but two fourteen-year-old girls at the school and now faces 29 counts of statutory rape.

A math teacher at Jefferson Middle School was charged Tuesday with 29 counts of statutory rape and other offenses after being accused of having sex with two 14-year-old female students.  Mark Tobin Mercer, 23, of the 800 block of Ellington Drive was charged with 13 counts of first-degree statutory rape, eight counts of felony sex offense with a student and eight counts of taking indecent liberties, according to arrest warrants. Mercer is accused of having sex with the girls between Oct. 1 and Dec. 28, 2010.

Mercer, who also served as girls volleyball coach at Jefferson Middle, was arrested yesterday after the students spoke with investigators.  Mercer is now suspended without pay, said Theo Helm, a spokesman with Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools. Superintendent Don Martin will recommend that the school board fire Mercer. The school system had announced Monday that he had been suspended with pay while police investigated.

“These charges are very disturbing and directly contradict our core mission of educating our students,” Martin said in a statement. “I hope the actions of one teacher will not reflect poorly on all the teachers who do their best for their students every day.”
