We’re still looking for some good video of this brawl, but basically it started with a close play in the 9th inning of a tight college baseball game between Elon University and The Citadel. Needless to say, based on the still images we’ve seen and the description of the fight, it sounds like a good one.
And by “good one” we mean something that younger ballplayers should NEVER try to emulate on the field.
Elon University lost its lead, lost a game and lost its cool in a brawl-marred game in the Southern Conference Tournament on Thursday at Riley Park. The Phoenix couldn’t preserve a ninth-inning advantage and committed two of its season-high six errors in the 10th inning of a 6-3 loss to top-seeded The Citadel, which was playing on its home field at Riley Park.
A ninth-inning fracas consumed most of the postgame discussion after a home-plate collision helped the Bulldogs go ahead. A fight ensued between the teams as coaches and umpires didn’t contain the fracas, which had several outbreaks. Police went on to the field to help restore order.
“The bad part about it is, it’s a black eye for our university, there’s no doubt about that, and probably for this league,” Elon coach Mike Kennedy said. “It’s unfortunate. Two great teams playing extremely hard with a lot on the line. We’re both playing for regionals and postseason play.”
