The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office confirmed it has opened an investigation into a brawl that broke out on the court after a post-season basketball game at Southside High School. Abbeville High School played at Southside on Wednesday night in the 2A Upper State semifinal. It was a very competitive game, with Southside holding off Abbeville for the win.
After the final buzzer came chaos. Law enforcement was called to Southside after the brawl broke out at the end of the playoff game. The primary focus of the sheriff’s office investigation will be to see if “disturbing the school” charges are warranted, said Melissia McKinney, sheriff’s office representative.
Investigators are also trying to pinpoint who started the fight, which McKinney said will be difficult.
It’s that time of year: high schools across the country start playing in state basketball tournaments. Most go smoothly, but some reach such a fever pitch that when the game is over the handshakes turn into punches and the players, coaches and fans all want to get involved. (Video link below.)
