Losing in double overtime is never a happy way to end a football game, especially when you could have upset a much better team. But really Wildcat fans, do you really need to throw nearly full water bottles down on the Oregon players and cheerleaders as they try to get off the field? Oregon senior cheerleader Katelynn Johnson was carted off the Arizona Stadium field on a stretcher in a chaotic postgame scene Saturday night. Johnson was apparently struck by a nearly full water bottle that was thrown from the stands in the moments after the Ducks beat Arizona 44-41 in double overtime. After being hit on the sideline, Johnson walked to the field before fainting on the grass. Johnson, a graduate of Thurston High School in Springfield, was transported to a local hospital for observation and was reportedly going to be OK.
Oregon senior associate athletic director Joe Giansante, who announced the Ducks’ television replay broadcast in the corner of the field where Johnson hit, said several items were being thrown toward Oregon players after the game. “As the team was coming in, they were getting bombarded with water bottles, batteries, and various other items coming out of the stands,” Giansante said. “We were yelling at everybody to keep their heads up, but one got through and hit Katelynn in the head. All the kids (on the cheerleading team) are scared, but hopefully she’ll be OK.”
