Fan Comes Out of Stands to Assault Opposing Player

We’re not making this one up: the name of the tough guy accused of putting some muscle on guy who roughed up it brother at a JV football game is Tony Italiano! Wonder what his nickname is?

Anthony Italiano, 20, East Calla Road, New Middletown, was charged with misdemeanor assault and criminal trespass in Columbiana County Municipal Court. He pleaded innocent to the charges Monday, and a pretrial hearing is scheduled for Nov. 3.

According to village police, Italiano is the brother of a player for the Springfield Local jayvee team, Lisbon’s opponent that day. About 9:45 a.m., Italiano’s brother and Lisbon jayvee player Billy Myers were involved in a play that resulted in a scuffle between the two.

Before it could be broken up by referees, Italiano reportedly came out of the stands and onto the field, grabbed Myers by the facemask and dragged him to the ground. When confronted over his actions, police said, Italiano refused to leave the field and continued to argue with officials and Lisbon coaches and swear at them and the team.

One of the assistant jayvees coaches for Lisbon is also a police officer, and he summoned the officer on duty, who arrested Italiano and took him away in handcuffs.

Rec League Football Coach Accused of Assaulting 12-Year-Old Player

We’ve seen some pretty bad assault cases before, but at what point can a youth sports coach cross the line from discipline into abuse? Here’s one example:

Dudley Whitley III, a coach for a recreational football league in Rocky Mount, has been charged with simple assault. Police say the 49-year-old coach allegedly hit the 12-year-old victim on the lower back with his hand as a means of discipline during practice. It happened August 13th at Tom Stith Park.

Police say they were notified by the city Parks and Recreation Department later in that week. A criminal summons was obtained by the victim’s mother after appearing before a magistrate.

War at KU Between Football and Basketball Teams

You’d think the basketball team would be a bit outnumbered, but that hasn’t stopped the Kansas Jayhawk dribblers from talking trash with the guys from the gridiron. The real question is: Is the University of Kansas trying to cover this feud up now?

The Kansas basketball team has been used to ruling the campus in Lawrence over the past two decades or so with multiple Final Fours and a pair of national championships. The football team might be encroaching on their turf with a BCS bowl appearance and a regular spot in the poll in recent years.

Kansas basketball Tyshawn Taylor reportedly will miss 3-4 weeks after a dislocated thumb from an incident with the Jayhawks football team.  If that didn’t cause animosity between the programs, recent events certain have. There have been three publicized incidents on campus in the last couple of days, starting with basketball player Tyshawn Taylor ending up in the hospital with a dislocated thumb on Tuesday night. Here is a copy of the police report. Taylor is expected to be sidelined 3-4 weeks.

Taylor, the third-leading scorer for Kansas last year, said in a Facebook comment he later took down that he dislocated his finger “from throwing a punch.”

Two more skirmishes occurred in response with one happening Wednesday morning. The Kansas student newspaper said on its website that basketball players Marcus and Markieff Morris, Mario Little, Sherron Collins and Taylor were at the scene. The site also had a video of several basketball players, including Collins and the Morris twins, ushered into a van by associate athletic director Sean Lester.
