How does something like this happen? Upset with your team’s play? Maybe you punch a wall or a kid, kick a locker or something, but bite a kid on the nose? You’d think the CSI guys would be able to extract your DNA from the wound, but maybe I’ve been watching too much TV lately. Of course, the coach/cop denies it happened, but something like that would be hard to cover up, wouldn’t it?
A Lake Wales police officer and football coach has been charged with battery after he allegedly bit a player on the nose last fall. Burney Hayes is a police sergeant and junior varsity football coach at Lake Wales High School.
According to reports, Hayes bit the player because he was upset with the way his team was performing during a game in October. The boy, who was 15 years old at the time, told an investigator that he was scarred and embarrassed after the incident.
Hayes denied that he bit the boy, and said he didn’t do anything inappropriate. The Polk County State Attorney’s Office says several students have testified that they saw Hayes bite the alleged victim.
