We’ve reported on lots of stories over the years of coaches who got a little upset and lashed out at someone: their own players, another coach, a referee, and sometimes a parent or fan. But a timekeeper? That’s what officials with Cape Breton University (Canada) are saying about St. Francis Xavier University X-Men assistant Garry Gallimore after a heated contest between the two schools Wednesday night. What happened is a little confusing (does anyone have the video) so I’ll let the National Post tell it to you:
With the score 90 to 86 in the Capers’ favour and 14 seconds left on the clock, the X-Men called for a time out. A Cape Breton student who was a volunteer official stopped the clock but the buzzer was apparently not heard in the noisy auditorium, leaving the X-Men coach agitated.
“You could hear it and see it. He pounded on the table in front of the kid,” said Mr. Harker. “Then Garry Gallimore [an assistant coach for the X-Men] entered the scene by leaning over and smacking the official in the head.”
The alleged smack brought a bench-clearing confrontation between players. Officials separated the teams without additional incident, although Courtney Thomas, a Capers forward, was ejected from the game for being first off the bench. Mr. Gallimore was also ejected from the game and police escorted him out of the auditorium, Mr. Harker said.
