Drunken Rugby Fan Goes Berserk in Restaurant

Rugby fans–the few that there are–are usually a well-behaved lot. It’s usually the drunken rugby PLAYERS who cause the trouble . . . but not in this case. Here’s more from This is Gloucestershire:

A drunken rugby fan went berserk in a restaurant and dragged a woman diner across the room by her hair. James Kane, of Netherwood Gardens in Cheltenham, caused havoc at the Taste of India in Gloucester in the early hours of November 30. The 46-year-old smashed tables, chairs, glasses and crockery and ripped a radiator from the wall.
Dressed in a Gloucester Rugby shirt, he also lashed out with his feet and fists at other customers and dragged Caroline Merritt from the middle of the restaurant to the foyer by her hair.
She screamed at him to stop and her husband punched him “as hard as he could” before he released his grip, magistrates heard.
When police arrived, Kane had to be restrained and handcuffed before being arrested.
Kane, who had no previous convictions, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm, criminal damage, using threating words and behaviour and resisting arrest.
Prosecuting solicitor Sharon Green said the incident happened at 12.10am.
She said: “The victim was enjoying a meal with her husband when the defendant and a group of men at another table started shouting and making a lot of noise.
“Mrs Merritt and her husband got up to leave when the defendant swore at them and became abusive.
“He was aggressive and offensive and started punching out at anyone.
“The owner asked him to leave but he refused and started lashing out with his feet and fists at other customers, including the victim and her husband.”
Ms Green said several glasses and items of crockery were smashed and two tables and five chairs damaged – to a total value of £650.
